Spread Some Christmas Cheer with Homemade Horse Treats!

The holiday season has arrived, and our horses deserve festive treats just as much as we do! What better way to show our equine friends love than with homemade cookies. Our three recipes are crafted by Jennie, with their health and happiness in mind, simple to prepare , and sure to get your equine friend into the Christmas spirit!

The Sweet Crunch - Your horse will love the sweet crunchiness of these little treats!

Ingredients:
1 ½ cup plain flour – white or wholemeal
1 cup bran
1 cup molasses
1 cup grated carrot or apple

Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 190C (or 170C fan-forced). Line baking trays with baking paper.
2. Mix all ingredients.
3. Using a teaspoon place spoonfuls around 2cm apart on the baking paper and flatten slightly with a fork dipped in flour. You should get approximately 25 cookies – depending on the size of the spoonfuls.
4. Bake for about 10 minutes.
5. Cool and store in an airtight container.

The Hydration Snack - Electrolyte cookies, perfect for those hot Australian Summer days!

Ingredients:
2 cups of barley or oats
2 cups rolled oats
700g of salt (sodium chloride)
3 cups bran
1 – 2 cups of water
1 cup of molasses or honey or apple sauce

Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 175C (or 155C fan-forced). Line baking trays with baking paper.
2. Mix all ingredients.
3. Spoon around 24 spoonfuls on the tray.
4. Bake for about 25 – 30 minutes.
5. Cool and store in an airtight container.

> Each cookie contains around 25g of electrolytes.

Metabolic Munchies - Suitable for horses with PPID, IR, EMS and Laminitis

Ingredients:
500g ground linseeds
125ml (1/2 cup) unsweetened applesauce
2 cups hot water
2 tablespoons cinnamon

Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 170C (or 150C fan-forced). Line baking trays with baking paper.
2. Mix all ingredients, let it cool.
3. Spread cooled mixture onto tray till around 3cm thick and score approximately 3cm wide. Sprinkle with salt.
4. Bake for about 75 minutes, turn off the oven and leave in for roughly 30 minutes until they cool.
5. Remove from oven and gently break apart the squares.
6. Cool and store in an airtight container.

Wrap them up and place them under the Christmas tree! 🐴
